Song premiere: You Blew It! covers Weezer's 'Jonas'

The band You Blew It! is releasing a Weezer tribute EP July 15 on Topshelf Records.

What were you listening to in 1994?

If you spent any time with MTV or alternative radio back then, there was no escaping Weezer's self-titled debut.

Also known as "The Blue Album," the record featured hit after hit: Buddy Holly, Say It Ain't So, Undone — The Sweater Song. It opens with one of my all-time favorite tracks from the band, the blistering My Name Is Jonas.

Next month Orlando band You Blew It! releases a Weezer tribute EP timed to the 20th anniversary of "The Blue Album." Appropriately titled You Blue It, it includes their versions of Jonas, Surf Wax America, Only in Dreams, Susanne and In the Garage.

Today I'm thrilled to premiere their My Name Is Jonas cover. Some background from singer/guitarist Tanner Jones:

"To say that My Name Is Jonas is an imperfect song would be the biggest lie of all time and is probably the easiest way to out yourself as a clear poseur. This made covering it very tough. After hours of pulling our hair out, we realized that altering it just for the sake of change might be borderline sacrilegious. For good conscience, we decided to keep the song as is, and bow our heads in respect for a song that begs nothing but tribute.

Good move. Hear it now:

You Blue It goes on sale digitally July 15 via Topshelf Records (pre-order it on iTunes) and will be available on vinyl Aug. 12. You Blew It! is currently on tour with Say Anything. Learn more about them at facebook.com/youblewitfl and twitter.com/youblewit.
